BUP File Extension While the file extension .bup is not one of the most commonly known file extension types, it is used quite frequently. Bup files are Back- up files used by a number of different programs and applications. There are two main types of .bup files. The first and most common type refers to data files which are created automatically by some programs “Generated in case a program crashes or the original file becomes corrupt and needs to be restored.” (File info) In this case, you can usually open the .bup file with the software used to create it.

If this does not work, you may have a file association problem. “Windows keeps a list of file associations so that it knows which program to use for which file extension. Sometimes corruption within the Windows registry affects file associations and confuses Windows.” (File Extension Type) You might consider running a reputable registry cleaner such as RegCure or Registry Mechanic to fix this problem.

The second type of .bup files are a component of most DVDs. A DVD actually contains three types of files, .vob files which contain the actual video/audio, .ifo files which contain information about the contents such as chapters, tracks, menus, subtitles and navigation and .bup files which are backup copies of the .ifo files. “The .bup files are used in the event that the corresponding .ifo file is unreadable, perhaps due to a scratch on the surface of the disc.” (Wikipedia )

If this is the case, you may never even know that there is a problem, as the DVD will automatically go to the .bup files if it cannot read the .ifo file. Bup files can be accessed by media players and “it shouldn’t be necessary to open them directly yourself.” (File-Extension) If you specifically need to open the files, .bup files can be opened using DVD player software including InterVideo WinDVD, Cyberlink Power DVD or Nero Showtime on Windows computers and Apple DVD Studio Pro on Mac computers.
