DB File Extension

If you receive or discover an unknown file with the file extension .db, you may have a bit of a mystery on your hands. While in many cases a file extension name is unique to a program or application, this is not the case with the .db file extension. There are 26 .db file extensions ranging from Oracle database files to MS Works files. (File-Extension) So if you received this file from a friend or co-worker, you may want to contact them and ask what program they used to create it. If that’s not an option, you can start with the most likely possibilities first.

Your .db file may be a generic database file, which can be created by a number of sources. A database is simply a structured framework for storing information or records that can be accessed easily. Probably the most common database program for most people is Microsoft Access, which is part of Microsoft Office. So try this first to see if it will open the file. Other programs that may open .db files include Corel Paradox and Synopsys Design Compiler. (File Info)

The other common use for the .db file extension is in Windows XP, where it refers to a thumbnail image database. “Thumbs.db is a system file generated automatically by Windows XP when you view the contents of a folder in ‘Thumbnail’ or ‘Film-strip’ view. Thumbs.db contains a copy of each of the tiny preview images generated for image files in the folder.” (Byte Tips) The purpose of this is to speed up displaying the thumbnail images, as they are stored rather than creating them anew every time you want to view them. (Ask Leo) If the file you have is a thumbnail cache file, it generally “should not be opened manually”. (Sharpened)

This type of hidden system file can be an irritation to some users who don’t necessarily want the .db files to take up extra space on their computers or in correspondence. “Many times you try to zip up a folder full of images and email them to a friend or upload them to an FTP site and thumbs.db goes along for the ride.” (Byte Tips)

If neither of these seems to relate to the file you have, you may want to check one of the file extension list websites such as File-Extensions for other.db file extensions that may solve your problem.
