File Extension DWG

The native file format of AutoCAD is file extension DWG. WG means “drawing” and these files are used to store two and three dimensional design data. DWG is the standard file format for interchange of CAD data between applications.

File Extension DWG Uses

In the 1970s, Mark Riddle developed the WG native file format for the Interact CAD package. Between 1982 and 2007, Autodesk created no less than 18 variants of the DWG file format for AutoCAD. Several company claim control over the DWG format including AutoDesk, who actually designs and defines the DWG format for their CAD applications. Uses for DWG files include Drafix drawing, AutoCAD Drawing Database, older generic CADD drawing format, Pro/ENGINEER drawing file, BravoDRAFT Detailer file and 2D Graphic file.

Is it possible to convert a DWG file to JPEG file? Export the view in AutoCAD to a .wmf file. Open the file in the image editor file and save as a .jpg file. Another way is to take a screenshot using the key on the upper right side of the keyboard and paste into the image editor. Opening the file in Adobe Illustrator offers the best quality.

User does not understand DWG file association in Windows XP. When a DWG is double clicked in Windows Explorer, the last AutoCAD product used is the default application. To change the file association, open Windows Explorer, go to Tools menu, click Folder Options then File Types. Select DWG under Registered File Types then click Advanced. In Edit File Type box under Actions choose Launch AutoCAD and click Edit. In Editing Action for Type – AutoCAD drwaing dialog box, choose Browse and acad.exe file as the one to use for opening DWG files. Click OK then enter %1 at the end of the path and acad.exe file in the Application Used To Perform Box. A space should separate the path and acad.exe file location.

User is unable to use DWGCheck feature. All version of AutoCAD from 2000 to 2007 have the DWGCheck feature. The default setting prior to 2007 was set to 0 and does not scan drawing files. When the default was changed to 1 in 2007, the checking feature was automatically turned on. Earlier versions must be done manually.
