If you are among the millions of people who use Microsoft Word for word processing, you are probably familiar with the Word document file extension, .doc. But what does it mean when someone sends you a file in the format .docx? What’s going on here?

What’s going on is with the release of Office 2007 Microsoft changed the default file extension of Word from the well-known .doc to docx. Previous file formats such as .doc were binary file formats, while .docx is based on Open XML format, developed by Microsoft. (Cybernet News) The .docx file format is a “combination of XML architecture and ZIP compression for size reduction.” (Filext) The benefits of the new .docx file format are claimed to include better interoperability between users of multiple computer platforms, smaller file sizes and improved data management and recovery. “Any application that supports XML can access and work with data in the new file format. This application does not need to be part of the Microsoft Office system or even a Microsoft product.” (Technet Microsoft)

While this may sound good, there can be consequences for Office users who have previous versions of Word. MS Office is considered the top office software in the world with over 400 million users. (Solid Office) However, many of these are still using Office 2002 or 2003 and the new .docx file format is not compatible with earlier versions of Word. So if someone sends you a .docx file and you cannot open it, this is probably because you have an earlier version of Word.

However, there is an easy fix for this problem. Microsoft has provided a “Compatibility Pack” download which is available free from their website, which will allow users of previous versions to open .docx files. So if you have Office 2007 and people you send files to complain they cannot open them, simply refer them to the site. The 2007 version of Word also allows users to choose which format they want to save files as —the old. Doc format or the new .docx format. (Microsoft)
