File Extension Exe

File extension EXE was created by Microsoft Corporation. Meaning executable file, it is essentially another way of referring to a program. Almost all programs running under DOS or Windows are in EXE format. All EXE files start with ASCII MZ but may be further identified by different compilers.

File Extension EXE Uses

EXE denotes an executable file. It is the common file name extension in DOS, Microsoft Windows, React OS, OS/2 and Open VMS operating systems. Other components that may be include in EXE files are icons and bitmaps to interface with the user. EXE files are self-launching. When a user double clicks the icon, the program launches by itself. This is convenient for files the user wants but problematic when it comes to spyware.

File Extension EXE Errors

Certain errors are commonly found when working with EXE files such as:

The file cannot launch and an error message comes up it is corrupt. Delete the file and download it one more time. If the file doesn't launch again, it is corrupt. The software manufacturer must fix the problem and the user should attempt to get the file elsewhere. If the file that has been installed suddenly does not launch, uninstall it and download the updated version of the program.

The message appears “File.EXE has generated an error”. If an executable file has general error message, there may be spyware interfering with the program applications and registry or a virus, trojan or worm. Files could be corrupted. The registry keys could be invalid or outdated. An anti-virus program will tell the user if there are unwanted elements present causing errors.

An EXE file program refuses to start or run. Another way to fix general EXE errors is to delete all temporary files on the computer. Go to Documents then Settings then delete everything from Local Settings/Temporary folder. Remove files from history folders and cookies. Go to the Start menu, to Run and enter cleanmgr in the popup box. Choose okay, choose the operating system (usually C drive), select Downloaded Program Files, Recycle Bin, Temporary Files, Temporary Offline Files and Temporary Internet Files to erase all temporary files. If errors still occur, a registry cleaner may help.
