M4A File Extension
If you are just a casual computer user, you may occasionally run into file extensions you do not recognize. While many file extension names are somewhat self-explanatory, such as doc for document or dat for data, there are others that seem to provide no clue as to their origin or purpose. This is particularly true in the area of audio/video files, where there are dozens of different file formats which can look like gibberish to unfamiliar users--.mp4, .swf, .3gp and .m4a. (File Info)
These are all some type of multimedia files and .m4a files are an audio-only type of MPEG-4 (abbreviated as .mp4) files. To begin with, MPEG-4 is a standardized format used worldwide for the compression and transmission of digital audio/video data. (Wikipedia) MP4 files can contain “any number of audio or video streams, making it impossible to determine the type of streams in an MPEG-4 file based on its file extension alone.” (File Extension Guru)
So users looking at an .mp4 file couldn’t tell if it was an audio, video or audio/video file. To respond to this issue, the .m4a or MPEG-4 Audio format was popularized by Apple Corps “with the purpose of helping users identify a file’s content by simply looking at the file’s extension.” (File Extension m4a)
Now that you know what an .m4a file is, you just need to know how to open it. On Windows computers, you can open and play .m4a files with Windows Media Player, Apple QuickTime Player or WinAmp. For Mac users, Apple QucikTime or iTunes, Roxio Toast or Windows Media Player. (File Info)
However, while .mp4 files are very common on Apple computers and devices such as iPods, you may run into a situation where you want to play your music on a phone or other device that does not accept m4a files. “If you want your music to be readily played on any computer or other multimedia device, you may think about converting to the even more popular and widely supported .mp3 format.” (My Music Tools) There are free converters available online from sites such as Cnet’s Downloads that can convert .m4a files to formats such as mp3, wav and many more to be compatible with any device you may own.
