PART File Extension
Have you turned up a file on your computer that seems to have the file extension “.part”? If so, you are probably wondering what type of file extension this is and if it really is a file extension at all since it has four letters and not the usual three. The fact is that although file extensions commonly use three letters, this is not really necessary today. Early versions of Windows imposed a three character limitation on filename extensions , which is no longer true. “However the use of three-character extensions under Microsoft Windows has continued, originally for backwards compatibility with older versions of Windows and now by habit…” (Wikipedia)
So file extensions can have three, four or more characters and .part is indeed a valid file extension. It refers to a file that is partially downloaded from the Internet, but is incomplete. For some reason, perhaps due to a lost connection, large size of a file or being stopped by the user, the file is not completely downloaded. This is why you have a .part file, as once the complete file is downloaded, it will be saved under its correct filename and the .part file will disappear. (File-Extension)
So, “If you have a file extension .part on your system, it simply means you did not manage to download a file correctly.” (Hub Pages) In some cases, you can resume loading a .part file “using the same program that started the download.” (File Info) Part files are used by file transfer programs or download manager software and can be opened in Windows with Free Download Manager, FlashGet and BulletProof Go!zilla. If you frequently download large files, you may want to consider using a download manager as they can be very useful when you are at risk of losing a connection before completing lengthy downloads. It is worth noting that when you download files from Internet websites or through file-sharing peer-to-peer (P2P) networks you should be very cautious. “These files can often contain Trojans and viruses.” (Part Extension File) and can potentially cause serious damage to your computer.
