But if you are having trouble opening .ppt files lately, there may be a good reason. With the release of Office 2007, Microsoft changed the default file extension for PowerPoint from .ppt to .pptx. “It might be that your version of PP is older than the version used to create the file.” (File-Extension) If you have an older version of Office like 2002 or 2003, it is no longer compatible with the 2007 version, “unless supplied with compatibility software”. Or if you have upgraded your software and your friends haven’t, if they can’t open .ppt files you send them, refer them to the Microsoft site. If you have Office 2007 and frequently work with .ppt files created with earlier versions, you have the option to save them in the earlier (.ppt) format instead of the new default .pptx. (PPT FAQ)
