File extension QIF is associated with Quicken Interchange Format files and was originally developed by Intuit. QIF is also supported by several accounting and financial programs. Quicken software is used for personal financial management.

File Extension QIF Uses

The QIF interchange file format is used for exporting files including pertinent data and financial transactions to other applications such as Microsoft Money. Data can also be transferred from the website of a financial institution to Quicken. A simple text editor is typically used to open QIF files. Quicken 2005 does not fully support QIF. Quicken 2006 does not support the file extension.

See if category names are too long as nothing beyond 29 characters and spaces can be imported. To correct the instances, use a freeware program such as Bbedit Lite.

Quicken will not allow QIF data import.

Quicken 2005 will not allow it for most types of accounts. Quicken 2004 and earlier will accept QIF data import as does Quicken 2005 for Mac and earlier. TurboTax and Quickbooks are not affected. QIF technology is over a decade old and designed for technical support purposes rather than transaction download. Thus, many steps are required for download. QIF import will be available for accounts where a download through Open Financial Exchange (OFX) is not available including: asset accounts, cash accounts, credit card accounts, invoice accounts from financial institutions, liability accounts and small business payable accounts.
