The .rar format was developed by Russian software engineer Eugene Roshal, which resulted in the name Roshal ARchives or RAR. The software to create .rar files, WinRAR is available from RarLabs for $29. (RarLabs) Although you cannot create .rar files without this software, you can open .rar files with Bitzipper or Zipeg in addition to WinRAR on Windows computers. Mac computers utilize WinRAR or Zipeg to open .rar files and Linux uses unrar. (File-extension) Be aware , however that you cannot run or use a .rar file directly. You first have to extract or unpack it from the archive, as .rar files can contain multiple files or even folders.

It has been noted that .rar files are easer to use than other compression formats and provide more features (Best Shareware). However, the major reason .rar files are not seen as frequently as .zip files is simply because more people have the software to handle .zip files, as Windows supports .zip files and does not offer support for .rar files.
