RAR File Extension
Although you may be aware of some of the more common file extensions, such as .mp3 for music and .pdf for documents, chances are you have not had to deal with .rar files. This type of files is not nearly as common as many other file types, as they are actually a data container or archive file. You may be familiar with .zip files, which are another type of compressed data or archive files.
Although .rar files are not as well known as .zip files, they actually have several advantages over the .zip type files. The .rar format is more efficient at compression of data, resulting in archives 8 to 30% smaller than .zip archives. (Tech Pro) They also include international character sets, for global use and have excellent encryption abilities, utilizing AES encryption. (Wikipedia) The .rar files also include recovery procedures to recover data, even in cases of physical data damage.(File-Extensions) They require less space to store and can be sent or downloaded more quickly than .zip fies. (Tech Pro)
The .rar format was developed by Russian software engineer Eugene Roshal, which resulted in the name Roshal ARchives or RAR. The software to create .rar files, WinRAR is available from RarLabs for $29. (RarLabs) Although you cannot create .rar files without this software, you can open .rar files with Bitzipper or Zipeg in addition to WinRAR on Windows computers. Mac computers utilize WinRAR or Zipeg to open .rar files and Linux uses unrar. (File-extension) Be aware , however that you cannot run or use a .rar file directly. You first have to extract or unpack it from the archive, as .rar files can contain multiple files or even folders.
It has been noted that .rar files are easer to use than other compression formats and provide more features (Best Shareware). However, the major reason .rar files are not seen as frequently as .zip files is simply because more people have the software to handle .zip files, as Windows supports .zip files and does not offer support for .rar files. Windows XP actually has built-in support for .zip files. (Tech Pro)
The most common error associated with .rar files is when someone sends you an .rar file and your computer says “Windows cannot open RAR files”. This usually simply means that you don’t have the software installed to open these files. You can download Zipeg or other.rar file openers free at Cnet’s Downloads.
