TIF File Extension
If you receive a file with a .tif file extension, you may be unsure as to what type of file this is and how to open it. With new file extensions appearing every day, it is almost impossible to keep up with all of them. Unless you work frequently with graphics files, you would be unlikely to know that .tif is a high-quality graphics file format. The tagged image file format is known for producing excellent image results and is considered “The format of choice for archiving important images.” (Scan Tips) Tif files are used for color photographs and document imaging, as they provide quality color and grayscale images. Brian Lewis, PhD, says “This is the best format for color pictures and should be used to save the master copy of important photographs.” (SPCUG)
The .tif format was developed in the 1980s as a standard image format compatible with multiple computer platforms.(Sharpened) The format was originally created by Aldus, but is now owned by Adobe. (Wikipedia) Today there are a number of varieties of .tif files—compressed, uncompressed, lossless, etc. (File-Extensions)One of the benefits of using .tif files is that they can be opened with many different applications on both Windows and Mac computers. Some of the programs that can open .tif files include CorelDraw, Adobe Photoshop, Windows Photo Gallery Viewer, Nuance Omni Pro and Apple Preview. (File Info) There are also numerous free image viewers available online that can open and view .tif files. Many of these programs such as Faststone Image Viewer and Irfanview allow you to view images in one format, such as .tif and then convert and save it in another format such as .jpg.
If you wonder what the benefit of this procedure is, the fact is that .tif files can be vary large files and may take up quite a lot of space on your computer, while .jpg files are much smaller and more suited to Internet or email applications. (Sharpened) It is also important to realize that although you may be able to open .tif files with a variety of image viewer software, if you want to change or edit the images, you will need to have digital image editing software such as Adobe Photoshop, GIMP or Corel Paintshop Pro. (Wikipedia)
Tif files may also be known as .tiff files (tagged image file format) particularly on Mac computers, but they are the same type file and behave exactly the same as .tif files. (File Info)
