TMP File Extension

Of all the thousands of file extensions that exist, .tmp is one of the most common. This is because the .tmp file extension refers to temporary files, which everyone will run into sooner or later. The .tmp files are not specific to any program, but are created by multiple programs and/or applications. They can be of two types, cache or backup. While in some cases, .tmp files may be necessary for the correct functioning of a program, in other cases, they may simply be unnecessary files that take up room on your hard drive. Generally, when a temporary file is no longer necessary, it is automatically deleted by the software that created it. For example, Windows uses .tmp files which are normally deleted at the end of a session. But if you shut down your computer with Windows running or do a restart, these files are not deleted. So how do you get rid of old .tmp files that may betaking up space without deleting .tmp files that are needed by an application? One of the best methods is to use the Windows Disc Cleanup tool.(Support.Microsoft)) Generally, it will not allow you to delete files that are in use. You can also delete .tmp files manually, but it’s a good idea to be sure they go to the Recycle Bin, where you can retrieve them if necessary and aren’t immediately permanently deleted. (PC World)
