WPS File Extension Have you seen or received a file with the file extension .wps? If so, you may be wondering exactly what type of file it is and how you can open it. Many people are not aware that this is another type of text file, used by the Microsoft Works word processor software. Microsoft Works is MS Office’s older stepsister, in that it was introduced first and contains fewer features. Works was introduced in 1986, with the Works word processor using the file extension .wps, while Microsoft Office wasn’t released until 1992. So where does that leave you if you have .wps files you need to open? If you don’t have Works on your computer, generally you can open .wps files in Word, although some users have reported this doesn’t always work. You can also try using a text editor such as Notepad, which may give you the text, although the formatting will probably be lost. If you have the correct software and still can’t open the files, they may be corrupted. This can happen for a variety of reasons including adding or removing software, registry errors or for no apparent reason. “File corruption can happen to just about any file type including .wps files.
