XLS File Extension

While most of us have become accustomed to the idea of file extensions when using computers, a lot of people aren’t sure what they actually mean. Generally a file extension indicates the file format or type of file to the computer’s operating system. (Hub Pages) While some file extensions can be used by many different programs, some are associated with a particular program or software.

The .xls file extension is an example of a particular file type—specifically, an Excel worksheet. Excel is the most popular spreadsheet program in the world and Excel worksheets can contain data such as numbers, formulas and graphs compiled from multiple sources. (Hub Pages) Excel is part of the Microsoft Office Suite of software and .xls files are proprietary to Microsoft. The .xls files use a Binary Interchange File Format to store spreadsheet data. (File Info)

Unfortunately, since .xls is a proprietary file format, this means you must have either Excel or Excel Viewer on your computer to be able to open this type of files. If you do not want to spend the money for the MS Office Suite, MS Works is a smaller and more affordable suite of programs that will also allow you to open .xls files. One of the hazards of opening .xls files is that they can carry viruses or spyware. Filext warns “This file type can become infected and should be carefully scanned if someone sends you a file with this extension.” (Filext) Most experts advise that you update your antivirus and antispyware regularly to stay current against emerging problems.

Another possible problem with .xls files is that your computer may not be able to find the correct program to open them. This can occur even if you have Excel installed on your computer. In many cases, the problem is due to a registry error, when information has been corrupted and the computer cannot locate the correct file associations. (File-extension)

You can first try running the Windows defragmenter to see if this helps. In some cases, portions of files become separated and the computer is unable to locate or execute them. (File Extension Type) If this does not solve the problem, you may want to consider running a reliable registry cleaner program such as RegCure or Reg Mechanic (Squidoo)
