XPI File Extension

While many file extensions are used by numerous applications or programs, some extensions are associated with one particular program or manufacturer. This is the case with .xpi files. They are used by Mozilla Firefox the second most common web browser, and associated Mozilla software. (Filext) An .xpi file is a compressed archive type of file, similar to a .zip file. “Mozilla cross-platform installers use .xpi as the file format in which to organize, compress and automate software installation and software updates.” (Mozdev)

This basically means that .xpi files are used by Mozilla to distribute plug-ins and add-ons for Firefox. “Add-ons are small pieces of software that add new features or functionality to your installation of Firefox.” (Mozilla) An .xpi file can allow you to change the theme or appearance of your browser, add additional language support, manage bookmarks, downloads and much more. (Mozilla) You can obtain .xpi file add-ons either through the Firefox browser or by downloading them from the Mozilla website.

In general, .xpi files should automatically install the extension or add-on without you having to do much. This is why the .xpi files are called cross-platform install files or XPInstall. Normally .xpi files are mainly trouble-free but if you encounter difficulties with them, keep in mind “One of the most common problems with .xpi files is trouble installing them. For example a file might not be compatible, the software might have XPInstall disabled or a site might not be trusted by Firefox to prompt you to install the software.” (File Extension Type)

If you are having problems with .xpi files, it’s a good idea to be sure you are running the most current version of Firefox. If you can’t open an .xpi file, try using an unzip utility such as WinZip or EasyZip. (The Free Site) “If you download an add-on but it doesn’t automatically install, drag and drop the .xpi file into the Firefox add-ons window. To open this window, go to Tools and choose Add-ons. Once the .xpi file is dragged in, the installation process should begin.” (File Extension Type)
